Operation: Mid-West, 100% Closed Brown Mill
Machines: Fourdrinear (2)
Grade: Producing 18-32 LB Medium Grades
Furnish: 100% OCC Recycle Furnish

Problem:

Mill wanted improved stickies control, reduced chemical costs and increased productivity. Machines and Converting Operations experienced breaks due to stickies & wax deposition. Press felt filling (inorganic/organic) resulted in poor dewatering and sheet consolidation and required solvent, caustic, & acid felt cleaning.

Minimal Stock Preparation equipment constrained pulp quality. Limited screening (0.72 hole screens) feeds rejects to a moderately effective tailings system, but no centrifugal cleaners or water clarification is used. This limited the mills ability to substitute lower grade OCC furnish. The resulting stock was high in dirt, stickies and wax causing excessive machine deposition and poor machine efficiency. Further more the system is a 100% closed water loop, zero discharge operation.

Solution:

ENESSCO Technology was initiated as a Contaminants"Modification" Treatment to replace the Diatomaceous Earth chemistry the mill was using. The ENESSCO promotes the contaminants to "independently" release from the recycled fiber. The larger contaminants are stabilized and are more efficiently removed by the stock preparation equipment, while the micro-stickies and wax are detackified.

ENESSCO enables the micro-stickies and wax contaminants that are not removed by the screening & cleaning system to be detackified.

ENESSCO improves Performance - ENESSCO’s ability to coat and render the remaining stickies inert, insures Paper Machine fabric and roll deposition control. 100% concentrated dry ENESSCO product was fed to the neutral pH pulper at 0.6 - 0.8 lb / ton.

Results:

ENESSCO treatment resulted in a dramatic improvement on both Fourdrinear Machines. The mill highlighted, “Stickies deposition has disappeared”. Felt Wash chemicals were cut by over 50% and the machine speeds were increased. Breaks were reduced by 65%. The mill was able to downgrade furnish as a result of improved machine efficiencies. Sheet appearance improved dramatically.

Performance gains were attributed to a significant reduction of Paper Machine deposition and the control of wax which is related to improved fiber bonding. Also since the addition of ENESSCO the mill has been able to reduce defoamer and rewet by 50%.
